You know, I have a hard time admitting I’m wrong, so I’m hoping these Kindle First recommendations are just having a moment and knocking it out of the park because I might not be able to handle it if I’ve been picking the wrong books each month (or worse just ignoring great books altogether!).
“Everything can be learned, you know? Some people learn sooner, others later. Not a big deal if the outcome is the same.” – Digging In
For this month’s free book, I chose Digging In by Loretta Nyhan. I started it half-heartedly one afternoon last week while eating lunch. In what seemed like seconds, I had read three chapters and my lunch break was over.
Digging In tells the story of Paige Moresco, a graphic designer by day and recently widowed mother of a teenager by night. She’s barely surviving both at work and at home thanks to a cloud of grief that hangs over her until one day, she starts digging in her backyard. At first, the digging is wine-fueled, but she quickly becomes a garden enthusiast thanks to some battered tomato plants and a quirky newfound sidekick.
Yes, this book is lighthearted, but it touches on parts of life, like grief, that are messy and not picky about to whom they encounter. It became especially endearing to me when I realized the author had lost her husband unexpectedly while writing this book.
I would happily read a book about any of the supporting characters in this story, including Miss Khaki. All in all, I wish I could go back and read this book all over again, but I guess Nyhan’s earlier book All the Good Parts will have to do.
